Design Process: I really wanted my own portfolio site to express my personality and all the things I love in design and life. Firstly I did a list of all the elements I wanted to include in the site design that looked similar to this –>
- Gradients
- Vector Shapes
- Stripes
- Watercolour
- Collage, especially embroidery/hand stitching
- Serif fonts
- Handwriting
- Green and Purple
- Chequered
- Lotus Flowers
- Butterflies
- 50’s Cheesecake Pin-up Girls
- Gerberas
- Diamonds
- Gwen Stefani
- Fishnet Tights
- Vintage Wallpaper Designs
Next I drew a sketch of what I wanted the site to look like. I’d already decided to put the weight of the design on wallpaper designs and hand stitching.
I then created my design in photoshop but I wasn’t keen on the way it was going so I went back to my original list and kept working in photoshop adding all the elements but instead using techniques from a tutorial I found in a photoshop magazine by Nigel Dennis on Organic Imagery.
The final major change was made to the side bar; originally I had an illustration of Gwen Stefani by Bob Masse dressed as a 50’s pin-up girl but I wasn’t sure that this was quite the right professional tone for a portfolio site and perhaps I should use this idea on something else instead. So I made the side bar you see now with the needle! This left a lot more room for some ads and other stuff too so the side bar could be more flexible in the future.

Having worked with you on various occasions I’ve always found your work to be of the highest quality and your professional attitude sets you apart from other web site designers I’ve worked with.

I adore this design. I’m so confused as to how people create real looking stitches… Did you draw them or scan them..or….??

You do it using photoshop brushes and paths. There are lots of tutorials on the net, this is a good one –> http://www.myjanee.com/tuts/brush7/stitch/stitch.htm

Thanks for your comment, the input text was left white after I’d completly changed my style sheet, and I am glad you bought it to my attention, as I’d overlooked it!
Did it really come across as angry, I was probably in a mood when I wrote it. Hehe.
