Design Rules

Title: The NHS Institute’s “Design Rules for Large Scale Change” event website

URL: http://www.designrules.org.uk

Tasks: Installation of Content Management System, Site Design following the NHS’s strict style and accessibility guidelines, Training of ‘Guest Bloggers’ during the event, Training of ‘Site Manager’ for post-event Site Updates, Management of site over event day, Management of Flickr.com gallery and YouTube.com channel insupport of website.

Taking place on July 4th 2008, Design Rules for Large Scale Change was an event where NHS colleagues and SHA representatives worked together to create and test a set of design rules and tangible resources for large scale change implementation within the NHS.

Design Influence:

Pre-event, the website was created not only following the NHS’s strict style and accessibility guidelines but also the site was required to ‘fit’ with the NHS Institute’s website. The website was designed to include feeds from Flickr and YouTube which would have new content uploaded throughout the event.

The site has a Blog page where, during the event, attendees of the event were invited to post their thoughts, feelings and aspirations about the day. A number of NHS Institute colleagues and SHA representatives contributed to the blog which helped to document exactly what was happening throughout the day. Towards the end of the event, a post about the final Design Rules that were generated during the day was included in the site and given a featured place in the navigation bar.

Post-event, the site had some features added to increase the usability and appeal to those who had been at the event, and any Internet users who were interested in what had happened. A group of fading images was included on the home page (using a javascript jQuery library) to really showcase all the activity of the event. The blog page was also tidied and information about each of the authors was included at the bottom of each post.
